Health leaders across Herefordshire and Worcestershire are asking people to look after themselves this winter by doing six simple things to stay well over winter and to help prevent additional pressures on the NHS.

Winter always sees a rise in infections, such as flu and respiratory illnesses but this year, with Covid still around and people mixing more over the festive period this has put additional pressure on health and care services.

Six things people can take now to help:

  • Help relatives get home from hospital as soon as they are discharged and ready to go home. This will help free up beds quicker so they are available for the sickest patients.
  • Boost immunity by taking up flu and Covid-19 vaccines - vaccinations are safe and offer the best protection against becoming seriously ill this winter.
  • Stay at home and treat winter illnesses with advice from nhs.uk. Common winter illnesses, such as colds and flu, can usually be treated at home without the need to see a GP or other health professional.
  • Consider a face covering when going out as it will help to minimise the spread of illness to others, particularly vulnerable people.
  • Check in regularly on elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours – it can help stop them from being admitted to hospital by simply checking in to see that their home is heated, that they are eating well, and that they’re staying hydrated.

Dr Will Taylor, GP and Chief Medical Officer for NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire said: “Most of us are already aware that health and care services across Herefordshire and Worcestershire are extremely busy, much like most other areas across the country.

“It’s really important that we’re able to treat those people who are most in need of urgent care. That’s why we’re asking you to look after yourselves - and your loved ones - this winter.

“If you’re able to do these six simple things this winter, then not only will you help yourself and your loved ones, but you’ll also help our busy health and care services.”
